Since January 2023, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas (WFSDallas) has been a proud service provider and recipient of funding for the Google STAR Fiber-Optics Project, a phased, multi-level training program designed to upskill underrepresented job seekers—including women, BIPOC individuals, and veterans—in the fiber-optics trade. The initiative, focused on communities where Google is expanding its data center operations, has provided participants with hands-on training, industry certifications, and direct employment connections.

Building a Skilled Workforce

The program launched with an initial goal of two training cohorts but quickly expanded due to demand, resulting in five successful cohorts totaling 42 enrolled participants. Through strategic recruitment adjustments and employer partnerships, WFSDallas has strengthened the industry pipeline, connecting trainees with companies like ABLE Communications, E2 Optics, and Real Network Services.

Cohort Success & Lessons Learned

Each cohort provided key insights, leading to program refinements that increased participant success:

  • Cohort 1 (Feb–Mar 2023): 85% employment rate despite initial industry awareness challenges.
  • Cohort 2 (June–Aug 2023): Adjusted recruitment process, leading to a 60% employment rate.
  • Cohort 3 (Oct–Nov 2023): Introduced in-person training, achieving an 87.5% employment rate.
  • Cohort 4 (July–Sept 2024): Continued in-person training model, employment rate of 63.6%.
  • Cohort 5 (Feb–Mar 2025): Focused on veterans, showing early promise with high engagement.

Transformative Impact

Participants like Rodrick Cody and Darin Jackson exemplify the life-changing power of the program. Rodrick, once on the brink of homelessness, secured a job at Dish Direct and is now working toward advanced certifications to start his own business. Darin, transitioning from warehouse work, leveraged his training to land a higher-paying role at E2 Optics, significantly improving his career trajectory.

Looking Ahead

WFSDallas exceeded program expectations under budget and seeks to expand the Google STAR Fiber-Optics Project beyond 2025. With strengthened employer relationships, refined recruitment strategies, and growing industry awareness, the initiative continues to offer job seekers a pathway to sustainable careers in the fiber-optics industry.
